Helmsley is situated between Thirsk and Scarborough and has plenty of cafes to stop off for refreshments and a rest from driving the country roads.

Helmsley is one of the most attractive villages in the country. It has a small stream running through the back of the square, pubs restaurants and shops.

Helmsley Castle is a must-see for any visitor to this picturesque market town. You will be able to discover how the castle evolved over the centuries, from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, to a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin.

Also nearby is Rievaulx Abbey, a former Cistercian abbey which was headed by the Abbot of Rievaulx, it was one of the wealthiest abbeys in England until it was dissolved by Henry VIII of England in 1538. Its ruins are now a major tourist attraction, owned and maintained by English Heritage.
